Better Get Hit in You Soul
By John Bouille
Think about how many jazz musicians started their musical journey in the church. Whether it was because they were forced to go to church or played in the band here is where they began their musical journey. Why does Charles Mingus’ “Better Git Hit in Yo’ Soul” and “Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting” seem to bring out that revival spirit in us? Answer, the same reason John Coltrane’s seminal masterpiece was a love poem to God.
Church and jazz have always been connected and that couldn’t be more evident than with the new release from pianist Pete Malinverni, “Joyful” on Artist Share records. Pete combines a Gospel Choir and Jazz Ensemble for a suite based on the Psalms of David. Pete is a minister of music at Devoe Street Baptist Church in NYC and has put together some works for the New Jazz Composers Collective. After putting together these works he realized it was time to make his dream of “Joyful” a reality.
He knew a project like this would not be easy so he enlisted the help of SUNY Purchase to provide the space to make the recording. He also called upon jazz friends with whom he has recorded with in the past. The final element that made the project come a live was provided by the Devoe St. Choir with narration by the Reverend Frederick C. Ennette, Sr. When asked about the source of his inspiration, Pete recalls a sermon where Reverend Ennette preached on the Psalms of David. The Psalms of David are songs of praise to God. The poetry speaks to us today which makes it a perfect fit.
Contributing musicians include saxophonist Steve Wilson, trumpeter Joe Magnarelli, Todd Coolman on bass and Dwayne “Cook” Broadnax on drums. Pete composed all of the music and the words are adapted from the Psalms of David. Expect a bit of the old time religion on “The Lord is Good” where Yvette Glover evokes the spirit of Mahalia Jackson and another beautiful vocal on “I Lift Up My Soul” from Jacklyn Lamont. Pete’s wife who has song on many of his albums in the past lends her talents on “Whither Shall I run”.
If you are still not convinced, Pete’s friend, acclaimed director Maryann De Leo captures highlights from the performance on a DVD which accompanies the CD. The DVD also features interviews with Pete about the project. In my opinion, there is only one word that can sum up this CD “Joyful”.
